Camp Marydale
Wrangler (age 14 and up) and Spur (age 12-13) Program
The next Wrangler Weekend is August 10-12, 2012 and the next Spurs Weekend is August 24-26, 2012!
Wrangler Program
Girls 14 and older
Ride’em cowgirl! Would you like to share your riding skills and knowledge of horses with younger girls? If you are 14 and older and LOVE horses, come be a part of the Girl Scout Louisiana East’s Wrangler Program. You will be paired with adult mentors to teach Western horseback riding workshops at Camp Marydale to troops and service units. Wranglers also help out with special weekend events such as Daisy Day, Love, Hug & Groom, and Holiday Horse Rider Core Camp.
How much time does it take?
Wranglers meet the monthly at the Council Regional Service Center in Baton Rouge to get up-to-date information about the horses, equipment and events at Camp Marydale. Wranglers are expected to participate in two or three weekends per semester and Wrangler Training Weekends that are scheduled twice a year, in August and January. All New Wranglers are required to attend the New Wrangler/Spur weekend trainings before they are allowed to work any other weekends.
What is a Wrangler Weekend?
These weekends are held at Camp Marydale and are designed to provide you with the opportunity to improve your basic horsemanship and riding skills, and give you a chance to get to know the other girls in the program. You will also have an opportunity to meet with horse care professionals and professional trainers. This is also the time to test to move up to a higher level. All New Wranglers are required to attend the New Wrangler/Spur weekend trainings before they are allowed to work any other weekends.
Wrangler Adults are also needed!
As with all programs we have to have enough adults working with the girls each weekend according to Safety-Wise ratios.
SPURS
Girls 12-13
Are horses your thing? If so, get ready to saddle up and learn all about your favorite animals. If you are age 12 to 13, LOVE horses, and aren’t afraid to get dirty, get ready to take a special “behind the scenes” look at Girl Scout Louisiana East’s Wrangler Program. Spurs will have the opportunity to “shadow” a member of the Wrangler Program to learn what it takes to be a Wrangler.
Girls who participate in the Spur Program are required to attend the New Wrangler/Spur Training Weekend before you will be allowed to attend any other weekend. The New Wrangler/Spur Training Weekends, held each August and December, will provide you with the opportunity to improve your horsemanship, riding skills, horse care, and a lot more. All Spurs must have a Spur Mom (two girls to one adult) attend camp with them on the weekend they sign up to work or they will not be able to attend that weekend.
*Spurs are not eligible for advancement beyond Entry Level until they turn 14 years old.
